Call to Action - UPDATED

Parts for a nebulizer, a device used to administer medication
in the form of a mist inhaled into the lungs
I'm writing this post because, according to Holiday Insights, February 14 is national organ donor awareness day. They can't be wrong.

Organ donation is an issue that I am happy to promote because, as I've shared with you before, two of my nieces have Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease that is not curable (though it is treatable) and is fatal. Full stop.

CF affects every organ in the body, but is lethal in the way it effects the lungs. The unusually thick, sticky mucus produced by CF patients accumulates in the lungs and causes reduced lung function, blockages and cumulative damage.

One of the last-resort life-saving measures for those who suffer with CF is a lung transplant. It doesn't cure the CF, but it gives the patient a new lease on life.

CF is just one example of illnesses where organ donation can save lives.

What can you do?

1. Register to be an organ and tissue donor. Here's where to find more information.
Alberta
British Columbia
Manitoba
Nova Scotia
New Brunswick
Newfoundland and Labrador
Ontario (online registration)
Prince Edward Island
Quebec
Saskatchewan

In the United States, visit organdonor.gov.

2. Talk to your loved ones, so they know how you feel.

3. Share this post on social media to help spread the word.

UPDATE:

4. Find out more about CF through the CF website (Canada | U.S.) and through my niece's blog, Diane, Diapers, and Drool.

  2. I did learn recently that in order to be valid for organ donation in Canada you have to be brain dead not just dead dead. That is part of the reason it is difficult to find enough donors and parts. It's a complicated system!

What did you think? Any comments?
