Oh, Interwebs!

This may be the worst accidental panoramic-photo fail I have ever seen. See more on Pleated-Jeans.com
Welcome to my periodic round-up of things I've found online that make me smile, cry, laugh, think, shout, or drop my jaw.

DROP MY JAW

In her blog post, If I had Known My Mother Back Then, Danielle Delph photoshopped herself into her mother's childhood pictures. The results are beautiful and fascinating.
I've always wondered if my mom and I would have been friends had we grown up together. Would we be in the same classes? Would we have the same sense of humor? Would people tell us we're inseparable? After seeing myself in her childhood photos, I'm pretty sure we would have been great friends.

SMILE

Three things:
  1. There is such a thing as a "bat hospital."
  2. Baby bats are actually pretty darned cute. Seriously: pacifiers and blankies.
  3. Which just goes to prove that baby "anything" is as cute as that anything will ever get.

CRY

Shortly after we received my son's diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome, a mild form of Autism, when he was five years old, I read somewhere that researchers had rated the stress levels of parents of autistic children compared to parents of children with terminal illness. The parents of autistic children had dramatically higher stress levels.

That, in part, is likely because the "normal" emotional connection with a child can be difficult to form when autism is present, especially profound autism. So it makes me sad to read stories like this one. An Oregon mother, whose husband was unemployed and extremely ill, dropped her six-year-old, autistic son off a bridge, to his death.

There must be a better way to support families like this.

THINK

Cord Jefferson shares how his mother's kindness is a powerful legacy, even as she fights cancer.
I’m now attempting to find some comfort in the idea that I can keep her close to me for as long as I live by struggling to remain decent, the pursuit that I've seen conjure up incredible power during the course of her life. The world takes from us relentlessly. It takes our friends and first loves. It takes our parents. It takes our faith. It takes our dignity. It takes our passion. It takes our health. It takes our honesty, and it takes our credulity. To lose so much and still hold onto yourself is perhaps the most complicated task human beings are asked to perform, which is why seeing it done with aplomb is as thrilling as looking at dinosaur bones or seeing a herd of elephants. It’s an honor to exist on Earth with these things.
