Buh-bye ghastly green!

I can't tell you how happy I was to see that moss green disappear.
Last night, for the first time since we moved in, we were able to sit in the living room without feeling like we needed to install pot lights. I didn't even hang up the string of twinkle lights that used to live in the window.

It felt good.

After considering the options, we decided to go with Knoxville Gray as a strong accent colour above the fireplace and the Wickham Gray for the rest of the room.

(The colours in my photos don't exactly match the swatches, largely because of lighting, I think.)

I could hardly wait to pull off the painter's tape and the dropcloths to see the room. I was not disappointed.

Not sure if this is the picture we will hang over the fireplace. It seems a little under scale.
Compare that to this:

Here, again, is what we've got with our new paints.

Haven't hung the brass hand- and foot-prints.
Compared to before:

You'll notice that we have not (yet) brought the large armchair back into the room. It just feels so much better without it there that we're waiting to see whether we miss it or not.

Instead, we've moved the old sewing machine to that spot.

This was my Aunt Betty's sewing machine and has been given to Katie.
We only have it temporarily, but it has great sentimental value.
We're not sure about which pictures to hang where, so this is just resting there as an idea. Can you believe how accurately the matte matches the wall colour?

And here is our "dark" corner.

This is where the sewing machine used to live. Not sure what we'll do there. We're thinking about book cases as we need more!

This is the other print option for over the fireplace.

Again, the matte is pretty much a perfect match
for the wall colour, which is not necessarily a good thing.
After all that work (approximately six person-hours to clear the room, tape, and paint), I am extremely happy with the results. So happy, in fact, that I think we can scratch one of the items off our wish list: install pot lights in the living room.

But tell me: which painting do you prefer above the fireplace: the screen-door etching or the larger veiled flowers print?

  1. definitely like the second picture over the fireplace -- it compliments the paint colour nicely. and wow -- so much lighter the room looks!! And I think removing the chair was good too.... and who doesn't always want more bookshelves! :)

    1. I'm actually surprised at how many different options I have that work with these colours. I thought I was going to have an excuse to go shopping. No such luck. Which, really, is a very good thing.

We've since brought the chair back in, but in a different -- better -- spot where it doesn't interrupt the flow of traffic.

    1. We're loving it, too. Wish I'd painted years ago!
